Travel Vaccinations

If you are travelling outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated to protect yourself against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world. Ideally, you should be assessed at least 8 weeks before travel and allow for relevant vaccination/anti-malarial courses to be started and for them to work.

At Panakeia (UK), we provide a range of travel vaccination treatments and can provide private prescriptions for any oral anti-malarial medication you may need.

You will need to attend a consultation first to assess whether any preventative measures are required. If a vaccination is required, you will be booked in for an appointment which should not last more than 10 minutes. If you require oral anti-malarial medication, a private prescription will be written for you during your consultation.

Considerations when planning your travel vaccinations include:

  • Destination – some diseases are more common in certain parts of the world than others. Risk of disease will vary even within different regions of the same country.
  • Time of travel – some diseases are more common during certain seasons, for example malaria during the rainy season.
  • Duration of travel – the longer the stay, the greater your risk of exposure to diseases.
  • Age and health –your age, status of your health and medical conditions will affect how vulnerable you are to infections and determine if certain vaccines/oral medication can be given.
  • Type of area and accommodation – generally, you are at more risk of disease in rural areas than in urban areas. If you are backpacking, staying in hostels or camping, you may be at higher risk than compared to if you are staying in a hotel.
  • Activities during your stay – spending time outdoors and in rural areas increases risk of exposure.
  • Medical profession – Working as a medical professional may require additional vaccinations.
  • Working as an aid worker – Exposure to diseases may be greater if working in a refugee camp or helping after a natural disaster and may require additional protection.
  • Animal contact – you may be at a greater risk of contracting diseases that are spread by animals, for example getting Rabies from wild dogs.
